Kevin Costner's Yellowstone Replacement Chances Look Dead After $100 Million Gamble Backfire

Horizon: An American Saga, directed by and starring Kevin Costner, is another Western like Yellowstone about a civil war involving families, friends, and rivals in the Old West.

The television series Yellowstone was a critical and public hit for Costner.

Horizon: An American Saga hasn't had the same impact, showing that it falls short of Yellowstone's standards.

Costner left Yellowstone to do Horizon: An American Saga, a risky move.

The show established Costner as a Western powerhouse, but the film failed to match its opening weekend performance.

Costner's decision not to return to Yellowstone has raised questions about whether he underestimated the difficulty of creating another successful Western.

Horizon is unlikely to replace Yellowstone in the public perception, however this is still an open topic. The opening weekend numbers for Horizon: An American Saga, a Western, were disappointing compared to Yellowstone.

Horizon's first of four parts grossed $11 million, a fraction of its $100 million budget. Costner committed almost $35 million of his savings to the film's budget, more than its first weekend earnings.
